The Estate

Farming that works

Our family has worked the land at Balcarres for over twenty generations – and while much has changed in that time, we remain a working estate committed to producing quality crops and food. Mindful of the harmful impact industrialised farming can have on soil health, Balcarres today treats regenerative practices as crucial to sustainable agriculture. Partnering with the local East Neuk Estates group to refine our centuries-old methods of rotational farming, we embrace innovations such as minimal tillage, cover-crop planting and mob-grazing cattle. By restoring carbon to the soil, we can help ensure its vitality is preserved – and even enhanced – in the generations to come.

“My Grandfather always said that they don’t make land anymore, so you have to look after it”.

- Farm Manager, Matt Waldie

Conservation

At Balcarres, respect for the natural world goes hand-in-hand with modern estate management. We focus on preserving and restoring our ancient woodlands, wetlands and pasture, creating and enhancing rich habitats for the benefit of native species from birdlife to butterflies. The planting of native tree species is an integral part of our environmental approach and since 2010 we have established many acres of new woodlands, totalling over 25,000 new trees. Balcarres today boasts a growing bee project with over 40 hives as well as a red squirrel initiative that is slowly but surely re-establishing one of Scotland’s most characterful mammals and giving them a permanent foothold in Fife.

Stay with us

Balcarres Estate began welcoming guests in 2020. Today, we offer accommodation across four beautifully restored holiday cottages and farmhouses. These historic stone buildings benefit from sensitive yet extensive renovations throughout, combining a rural aesthetic with modern luxury. All of our properties prioritise British suppliers and materials, while showcasing the stylistic flair of New York-based interior designer Amelia Elliman.

Dumbarnie Links

Balcarres is home to Dumbarnie Links, which has quickly gained a reputation – and numerous awards – as Scotland’s best new golf course since its opening in 2020. Designed by the legendary Clive Clark, Dumbarnie’s 18 holes combine a classic Scottish links experience with dramatic elevations and a thoroughly modern risk-reward playoff – all in a stunning coastal setting enjoying panoramic views across the Firth of Forth.
